Yoichi Nagumo[5] (
Appearance[]
Nagumo is a handsome man of tall and slim build, medium-length black hair and large black eyes. He wears a red polo shirt with teal, black and white triangle-shaped patterns under a cream-colored trench coat (in the manga, the shirt is white with paterns being red and navy blue, while the shirt being light blue and the coat is brown in the digital colored manga) as well navy blue pants (black in the digital colored manga) and black shoes.
He occasionally wears a white buttoned shirt with a black tie under a dark green business suit (in which he sometimes omits the suit and tie) He also carries a gray briefcase around on his back, which in it contains his signature weapon.[7]
When Nagumo was 14 years old, he was taller and skinner than its adult self. His outfit consists in a black t-shirt under a yellowish-orange jacket containing black drawings of chains, navy blue shorts and a pair of wooden sandals.
Tattoos[]
Nagumo has many tattoos, most of which are hidden by his clothing. His tattoos have mathematical inspirations, in particular, referencing the Golden Ration.
Tattoos shown include:
- On the left side of his neck, he has a marking of the Fibonacci Spiral.
- The growth factor of the Fibonacci Spiral is the golden ratio, ~1.6180.
- Two rectangular tattoos on both his hands, another reference to the golden ratio.
- The formula on his right forearm.
- This a presentation of an infinite sequence of nested square roots which resolves to ~1.6180... (the golden ratio).
- 5 rectangles with different designs (and the third and fifth of which are black), next to the formula tattoo.
- The symbols, '2', '', '1' and '%' on his index finger, middle finger, ring finger and pinky respectively.
- A snake coiled around his lower left leg.
- A swallow on the right side of his right leg, just below the knee.
- An impossible shape on his shin, below the swallow tattoo.
- A square made of various spaced lines and curves on his right thigh.
- A mandala-esque pattern on his right shoulder.
- A pair of praying hands on his left pectoral.
- Likely inspired by the Praying Hands drawing by Albrecht Dürer.
- Anton Chekhovs quote "Although you may tell lies, people will believe you, if only you speak with authority" on his right bicep[8]
- A line which intersect, wrapping around his anterior forearm.
- A patterned, isosceles triangle on his left posterior forearm.
- A rectangular tattoo on his right tricep.
- A tattoo that is a reference to Leonard Shelby from Christopher Nolan´s Memento. on his left bicep.[8]
- A wing on his left waist.[9]
- An unidentified tattoo under his left armpit.[9]
- Arthur Schopenhauer quote "The doctor sees all the weakness of mankind; the lawyer all wickedness, the theologian all the stupidity." on his right side.[8]
- A pair of hands featured in the famous painting "The Creation Of Adam" by Michelangelo, but on the tattoo what would be Adam's hand is flipped so the palm faces upwards as supposed to down.[10]
Personality[]
Nagumo's most notable traits are his laid-back attitude accompained by his constant smile that seems impossible to wipe off his face. He also has an incredible talent for annoying those around him to the point of making them want him dead.[11][12][13]
Nagumo also shows to had pretty carefree, even in the middle of intense battles, once claiming to enjoy the wind in his hair as he stabbed a man in the arm.[14] He is also very playful with his opponents, as demonstrated multiple times. For instance, he evades and tricks Minimalist, a hardened serial killer, before handing him some dice to decide which of his blades he'd die by.[15] Another example is during his fight against Gaku, where he asked the latter if he liked Bruce Lee after being hit with a one-inch punch.
However, when it comes to matters involving his friends, Nagumo tends to reveal his true emotions. One such instance is when he shoves Uzuki out of Takamura's path, wondering why he saved him despite being a dangerous serial killer, influenced by the fact that a part of Rion Akao still resided in Uzuki's body. In fact, Nagumo has shown deep care for his old friends Sakamoto and Rion since their time at the JAA, still thinking about her even after she was confirmed dead. This is also confirmed in their encounter during the Assassin Exhibition of the Century Arc, where, once Rion took control over Uzuki's body and spoke to him, Nagumo immediately recognized Rion's personality and questioned her identity.
Nagumo believes the key to killing is "deception",[16] despite claiming to abhor it.[17]
Relationships[]
Allies[]
Taro Sakamoto[]
Nagumo and Sakamoto first met when they were both enrolled at the JCC, having known each other since they were 14. Nagumo cares deeply about Sakamoto, to the point of not wanting him to be in danger, even though he knows Sakamoto's help is often necessary. Nagumo has repeatedly demonstrated his close friendship with Sakamoto, maintaining contact with him even after Sakamoto retired from being an assassin and became hunted by the JAA[18]. He has also done favors for Sakamoto and helped him out, such as when he disguised himself as Aoi Sakamoto and stood in as a cashier, killing Minimalist in the process.[19]
Sakamoto and Nagumo remained close friends over time and even collaborated, along with Kei Uzuki (who was taken over by Rion's personality), during their fight against Takamura in the Assassin Exhibition of the Century. Nagumo refused to follow Asaki's orders and chose to side with Sakamoto, leading to both of them being expelled from the Order and hunted by the JAA.
Rion Akao[]
Nagumo met Rion after transferring from the Spy Department to the Assassin Department, where she initially wanted to attack him.[20] Along with Sakamoto, they soon became an inseparable trio, causing property damage and engaging in playful banter and fights. Their antics eventually led to their expulsion from the JCC, after which they were introduced to Kindaka and the Order together.
After Rion's death, Nagumo investigated her death through various methods. This included paying for Kindaka's recovery bills and rescuing Yotsumura from drowning, so he could order him to look for any intel related to Rion. Nagumo has shown many times that he cares deeply for Rion, such as when he hesitated to attack Uzuki when Rion took control of his body and when he bore the brunt of Takamura's attack to protect Uzuki.
Kindaka[]
Nagumo first met Kindaka after being expelled from the JCC due to his behavior and constant fights with Rion and Sakamoto. In an effort to have the expulsion withdrawn, Nagumo, Sakamoto and Rion accepted a mission to assassinate Kindaka. However, after meeting him and engaging in a fierce battle, Kindaka offered Nagumo and the others a place in the Order and took them on a mission with him. Later, Kindaka fell into a coma due to Kobayashi's poison. Driven by his desire to investigate Rion's death, Nagumo paid Kindaka's hospital bills for eight years in a row, covering 1.2 million yen per month. When Kindaka eventually woke up, Nagumo handed him the entire bill, which totaled 1.15 billion yen, and asked him to repay the amount.
Shishiba[]
Nagumo and Shishiba seem to have a good and mutual relationship, though he tends to get on Shishiba's nerves sometimes to the point of being threatened.
Skills & Abilities[]
Overall Skill Level: Nagumo is an ex-member of the Order and one of the strongest assassins in Japan.[21] As a student Nagumo was one of the three greatest prospects to ever step foot into the JCC alongside Taro Sakamoto and Rion Akao. Kindaka a founding member of the Order stated that the three of them could be future leaders of the assassin world.[22] In current time, Slur considered Nagumo as one of the top two fighters in the Order, and thus the second strongest assassin in the JAA.[23]
Granny Miya stated that he is currently stronger than Taro Sakamoto due to the latter's five year-long retirement.[1] Kashima, a powerful assassin working for Slur, classified Nagumo as an S-rank target on the hit list he created.[24][25] Taro Sakamoto, "the legendary hitman" himself, even stated that it would take a lot for Nagumo to lose a fight.[26] Due to his exceptional combat abilities, he was able to put Gaku, one of Uzuki's strongest subordinates on the brink of death after engaging him in battle.[23]
Master of Disguise: Nagumo can copy other people's appearances perfectly in an instant, which he used to fool Lu Shaotang by disguising as Sakamoto.[27] He can also disguise others, including significantly altering someone's body shape, such as disguising the fat Sakamoto as his wife, Aoi. When disguising Sakamoto, Nagumo says the disguise would only last for twenty-four hours.[28]
Master Combatant: Rion Akao states that Nagumo does everything with coordination and skill, which makes him a deadly combatant.[29] This was made evident in his fight against Gaku; despite being outmatched in physical ability, Nagumo was able to defeat him with his combat skill and trickery.[23] His combat skill was stated by Slur to be among the top two in the Order.[23] He can even render a man completely unconscious with only his killing intent.[30] Nagumo is also extremely proficient with bladed weapons.[31][32][33][34] He was able to decapitate Minimalist with ease,[35] and kill multiple assassins in one swift motion before they could even react.[36] Nagumo was able to land devastating strikes on Gaku by catching him off guard with hidden weapons or by distracting him with his dice.[37][38] Even after his weapon was destroyed, leaving him with all his blades separated, Nagumo was able to fight on par with Gaku and eventually pierce him with the separated blades to end the fight.[23]
Expert Marksman: Nagumo can use firearms with great proficiency. He ranked 4th place in the top 10 greatest shooters of all time at the JCC, having scored 84 points.[39]
Morse Code: Nagumo can use morse code, as shown when he uses the signal lights of a moving vehicle to tell Shishiba that he was "killing".[40]
Keen Intellect: Nagumo was a part of the intelligence-gathering department during his younger days at the JCC.[41] He is a highly perceptive individual, quickly able to deduce Kindaka's theory of a spy existing within the JAA's organization without the latter even saying anything,[42] and was also able to quickly notice that Erio Muto, a JAA executive, was a spy working for Slur.[43] His intellect and planning is partly what makes him such a deadly fighter, as he's able to stay one step ahead of his opponent through deception and schemes.
- Poison Knowledge: Most likely due to his upbringing as a spy’s apprentice and his training at the JCC, Nagumo is very knowledgeable of how poison works and understands how to adapt to it.[44]
Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Nagumo is capable of moving at extreme speeds, being fast enough to instantaneously disappear from a person’s sight.[45] He can move so quick that he managed to catch even Shin off guard,[46] as well as decapitate Minimalist in an instant.[47] Assassins working for Slur were unable to pinpoint or react to him, even as he sat on top of and inside their vehicle and massacred them.[48] Nagumo was also able to save Heisuke Mashimo from a potential head shot.[49]
Enhanced Strength: Nagumo casually lift Minimalist by the neck with one hand[50] and was strong enough to contend with Yotsumura's attacks which could easily slice through the steel supports of a car carrier trailer.[32]
Enhanced Durability: Nagumo is incredibly resilient despite his skinny build. He remains completely unharmed after taking a hit from Gaku´s mace that sent him flying through multiple walls,[51] a display airplane,[52] and a car sculpture.[53] Even after taking a point-blank ranged attack from Gaku's powerful laser cannon that sent him crashing down to the ground with devastating force, Nagumo received only minor injuries.[54]
Equipment[]
Multi-Tool: Nagumo uses a large switchblade-like weapon that has six different functions.[55][32] In the past, he carried each blade separately under his trench coat.[56]
The weapons contained inside his large multi-tool weapon include:
- Multiple Blades
- Daggers
- Inside the weapon, Nagumo carries a pair of daggers who have blades sharp enough to pierce through the roof of a SUV being driven by a assassin targeting Shishiba and durable enough to withstand blows from Yotsumura´s staff.[14]
- Scythe
- Axe
- Nagumo's weapon can transform into a durable axe that he used during his fight against Gaku to send him crashing into the wing of an airplane. The back side of the axe is flat, which confused Gaku about whether the weapon was an axe or a hammer.[59]
- Invisible Blade
- A disposable yet sharp blade, made entirely of ceramic, with the peculiar characteristic of being almost invisible. By distracting Gaku with his other weapons, Nagumo managed to sneak the ceramic blade out and stab him.[60] It is stated that the blade only works once, as it becomes visible after being soiled with blood.[61]
Dice: Nagumo uses a single dice to decide which blade he will kill his enemy by,[15] or to distract his enemy to deliver a devastating blow.[62]
