The Order (ORDERオーダー Ōdā?) is a group within the Japanese Association of Assassins, consisting of some of its strongest assassins. Their main task is maintaining the order of the assassin world when friction in the industry arises.[1] Their existence is considered an urban legend.[2]

Overview[]

The Order's Members

Nagumo explaining the function of Order to Shin and Lu.

The Order is a suborganization of the JAA, consisting of some of its strongest members. While the Order has a limit of ten members, the roster has never been full.[3] They work for the JAA's chairman, but typically report to proxies, though Iriya, an Association of Assassins Communications Coordinator, has given them missions on one occasion.[4]

Each member of the Order is significantly more powerful than the average assassin in virtually all aspects.

  • Taro Sakamoto estimated that even if ten of Shin Asakura attacked one Order member, all would die in six seconds and his best bet would be to play dead if he met one.[5]
  • JAA Western Japan Headquarters director Fukumitsu stated that a single Order member is more than capable of destroying an entire JAA branch.[6]

The Order has a leadership role, but no other formal hierarchies have been announced within the order, though several informal mentorships have been revealed: Satoru Yotsumura's mentorship of Shishiba,[7] and Shishiba's unofficial mentorship of Osaragi. Oki is the current leader of the Order. Order members generally have little regard for each other and remain unperturbed if a fellow member dies.

Membership of the Order seen thus far has only been through recruitment. So far, only Order members in leadership positions have been shown to recruit new members. While almost all Order members are Japan Clear Creation graduates, graduation from the JCC is unnecessary

  • Shishiba was a Kansai Region Assassin Institute dropout.[8]
  • Osaragi never attended an assassin institution.[8]

Order members can be banished; former Order member Yotsumura was also sentenced to death and banishment for failing a major mission[9][10] and for trying to kill JAA executives.[11]

Order members appear to enjoy a greater degree of freedom, as Osaragi stopped to buy snacks during missions[12] and four Order members failed to show up for a mission briefing with Iriya.[13] Similarly, the pay appears to be very high:

  • Sakamoto was able to pay 756,000 yen for information.[14]
    • Since Sakamoto currently runs a convenience store, it is likely that this money comes from his savings from his time in the Order.
  • In a post-chapter panel, Hyo purchases a replacement MRI machine for 1.5 billion yen.[15]
  • Shishiba and Nagumo rented a luxury SUV (with full-coverage insurance) for a mission.[16]
  • Members have congregated in high-class restaurants for meetings at least once.[13]
  • Sakamoto enters a bidding war with Kamihate for a ticket to the Assassin Exhibition of the Century, bidding up to 500 million yen.[17]
  • Nagumo were able to pay for Kindaka's treatment fee, for 8 years.[18][19]

Mission[]

The Order's role is described as maintaining "order" in the assassin world when friction arises. Though an exact definition of "friction" has been unspecified, it may refer to individuals that pose a threat to or disrupt everyday operations.

  • The Order sent various members after serial killers Minimalist, Dump, and Saw, who were all broken out of jail for targeting assassins and/or destroying assassin agencies.[20][21][22]
  • The Order sent various members after Kashima during the events of the Lab Arc, likely due to the trouble his research would cause the JAA.
  • Order member Takamura, who has only been seen acting on orders, shows up at the JAA Tokyo Bureau due to it being attacked by Slur and Gaku.[23]
  • Order sent their entire roster to protect the JAA chairman at the Assassin Exhibition of the Century and eliminate Slur, with Takamura showing up the last.
  • Oki briefed the team to capture Nagumo, Sakamoto, and Slur in the aftermath of Assassin Exhibition of the Century Arc.

History[]

At an unknown time before the start of the main story, the Order was founded by Kindaka and Satoru Yotsumura. It is not known if there were other founding members.

At an unknown time before the main story, the Order would try to recruit eventual JCC teacher Etsuko Satoda but were turned down as she wanted to focus on the education of the future generations of assassins.[24] At an unknown time before the main story, the Order would recruit members Hyo, Shishiba, Takamura, Kamihate, and Oki.

At an unknown time before the main story, the Order would recruit members Taro Sakamoto and Yoichi Nagumo.

  • While being sent on a mission to eliminate the Steel Dragon (secretly Kindaka in disguise), Kindaka would extend a verbal offer to Taro Sakamoto, Nagumo Yoichi, Rion Akao, and Kei Uzuki to join the Order. None of them would accept the invitation during the mission, and Rion and Uzuki would eventually disappear after the mission, before getting a chance to formally respond to the offer. At the time of this verbal offer, the Order was implied to have at least four members, including Kindaka and Yotsumura.
    • The four members' silhouettes were shown with two of them bearing a loose resemblance to Kindaka and Yotsumura, and one of the remaining silhouettes bearing a loose resemblance to Hyo. The final silhouette does not resemble any revealed member of the Order. It is possible this is the Order member that Kanaguri would eventually kill and take the place of.
    • Kindaka says that there "are only four of us in Japan right now".[25] Order members have been known to have assignments overseas,[26] and so it is ambiguous if there had been other Order members at the time or not.
  • After offering a position in the Order to Sakamoto, Nagumo, Rion, and Uzuki, Kindaka would ask the four to assist him as a bodyguard in an escort mission for the wife and child of the then-JAA Chairman as he was injured during combat with them. Kindaka would go into a coma after inhaling poison gas on this mission.
  • Sakamoto and Nagumo would officially join the Order sometime after this mission.

At an unknown time before the main story, Order member Yotsumura failed to protect the JAA chairman and be expelled from the JAA. Shishiba was sent to assassinate Yotsumura but would be ultimately unsuccessful.[27]

  • Since the Order is a subgroup of the JAA, this is also Yotsumura's expulsion from the Order.
  • Shishiba was assigned to kill Yotsumura as a result of Yotsumura's failure. Shishiba would not kill Yotsumura, and it is implied that Shishiba intentionally let Yotsumura live. Subsequently, during the JCC Infiltration Arc, Shishiba, together with Nagumo and Osaragi would once again be assigned to eliminate Yotsumura, and would once again not kill Yotsumura, instead choosing to throw him into a river and let him bleed out.[28]
  • Nagumo would later then pull Yotsumura out of the river, and force Yotsumura to covertly investigate the circumstances of Rion Akao's death,[28][29] while keeping the fact that Yotsumura is alive hidden from everyone except Shishiba.

At an unknown time before the main story, Order member Taro Sakamoto would retire as an assassin and leave the Order.

At an unknown time before the main story, the Order would recruit member Kanaguri after he killed an unknown Order member (who was also Kanaguri's good friend) over an argument about what makes the greatest movie, and would join the Order in his place.[28] This likely happened before the main story began.

  • During the JCC Transfer Exams Arc, Sakamoto would fail to recognize Kanaguri.[30] This implies that Kanaguri's recruitment into the order is after Sakamoto's retirement.
    • It is possible Kanaguri was recruited before Sakamoto had left the Order and Sakamoto had simply not seen Kanaguri between Kanaguri joining and him leaving, or that Kanaguri's appearance had changed significantly between then and now.

At an unknown time, the Order would recruit member Osaragi.

  • Osaragi would be introduced to Yotsumura by Shishiba, implying that Yotsumura had been removed the Order before Osaragi was recruited.
  • A flashback Hyo has implies that Sakamoto was still in the order when Osaragi was recruited.[31]

During the events of the JCC Infiltration arc, Order member Kanaguri would be expelled from the Order and the JAA.[28]

  • Kanaguri's expulsion was for concealing evidence from the JAA and suspected collusion with X. His actions are likely motivated by his desire to film the conflict between X's Organization and the JAA from both perspectives.

During the events of the Bangkok arc, Order member Hyo would be killed in combat by member of X's Organization Kumanomi.[32]

  • Hyo would go to Bangkok, Thailand in order to investigate X's Organization.[31] Hyo would assist Heisuke with recovering his stolen baggage and be lured into combat with Kumanomi, who manages to injure and subsequently drown Hyo.

During the events of the Assassin Exhibition of the Century arc, Order member Nagumo Yoichi would be expelled from the Order, and Order member Takamura would be killed in combat.

  • JAA Chairman Sei Asaki would instruct Nagumo to kill Rion-Uzuki. Nagumo would instead decide to ignore his instructions and escape together with Sakamoto and Rion-Uzuki. As a result, JAA Chairman Sei Asaki would simultaneously expel him from the Order and designate him (along with Sakamoto and Uzuki) as a Special Class-A extermination target, wanted for conspiracy against the JAA.
  • Takamura would see extermination targets Sakamoto, Nagumo, and Uzuki together, and engage them in combat. Takamura would injure them but would ultimately be overwhelmed after Uzuki's companions join the battle and be killed by Uzuki himself.

At an unknown time, Oki took over as the leader of the Order.

  • Oki was implied to be overseas for a large part of the story.

At an unknown time while he was overseas, Order leader Oki recruited members Torres and Tanabata.[33]

The Al-Kamar orphanage was a scheme to take in orphans and train them to kill, creating Order members. No Order members have been revealed to be from the Al-Kamar orphanage.

Oki has decided that currently, the best course of action for the Order is to work with X and his organization, likely due to how unlikely it is for them to defeat the former's Takamura personality.

Trivia[]

  • Takamura is likely the earliest of the Order members to have joined, with the possible exception of Oki. Several characters throughout the series have remarked not knowing anything about him and how long he has been around in the assassination world before his death.
  • At an unknown time, Hyo was recruited into the Order by Yotsumura. His exact time of recruitment is unknown, but it is strongly implied to had been at the same time as Sakamoto and Nagumo.[34][31]
    • It is suggested that Hyo had been in the JCC as a trainee the same time that Sakamoto and Nagumo had been trainees there, and it is implied that they were not in the same year, however it is unclear whether Hyo had been the senior or the junior,[35] especially since JCC trainees can vary greatly in age.
    • Hyo has a flashback of himself interacting with Yotsumura, where Yotsumura critiques his lack of talent, but it is not clear if either had been part of the Order during this flashback.[31]
  • At an unknown time, Shishiba would be asked by Yotsumura to accompany him on one of his jobs.[36]
    • As there is no scene showing Shishiba being explicitly invited to be an Order member, this is likely when Shishiba was recruited into the Order by Yotsumura.
    • Yotsumura was assigned a mission that placed him and Shishiba on opposing sides, and Yotsumura would eliminate all of Shishiba's companions. Yotsumura would then give Shishiba the option of being killed by him or joining him on other jobs, and Shishiba would follow him.
    • Shishiba would very frequently pair with Yotsumura on assignments, frequently enough that Yotsumura's son Amane would recognize him as Yotsumura's underling.
  • Nagumo and Sakamoto attended the JCC together, learnt and were introduced to the Order together, and were recruited together.
